2020 has certainly been an interesting, terrifying and wild year. Who thought we’d be in the midst of a deadly pandemic second only to the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919? Back then the newspapers were filled with horrible photos of people laying on gurneys in hospitals overrun with a terrible sickness. Millions died. Now, we are seeing a similar pattern. Hospitals full and over capacity, doctors, and nurses worked to exhaustion, millions sick, and millions dying. Wear a mask, get tested, social distance we were told. Now, in addition to those guidelines we are being instructed to not celebrate the holidays with family and friends who do not live in the same household. Holiday shopping in person is a danger. Where does it end? It ends when enough people are vaccinated (I’m not advocating for or against) and people have followed the guidelines put out by the CDC for a long enough period of time to see a significant decrease in infection rates.
Everyone couldn’t wait for 2021 to put in an appearance. It had to be better than 2020, right? So far it doesn’t look like it. Covid-19 is still running rampant through the world. New variants appear to spread faster and may or may not be deadlier or resistant to the new vaccines. The Texas power grid (the only state in the USA with a power grid) went down during a record setting ice, snow, sleet, freezing rain storm and equally brutal temperatures of 10-32 degrees. Japan had a 7.1 earthquake near Fukushima (the prefecture where a nuclear power plant melted down in 2011) and New Zealand followed close behind with an 8.1 earthquake.
